The Book of Daniel is the story of a young man during the exile period of the Jews. This exile was prophecied about by the Prophet Jeremiah, in which he said that because the people had forsaken God, there would not be piece, but that a foreign nation would take over. However, if the Jews would pray for repentance and respect the rulership of the foreign king, they would live peacably while in exile, and Jeremiah even said that the exile would only be 70 years.

70 years can be a long time, though, and Daniel lived out his life as an exile in Babylon. Even as a child, he was selected to serve the king, because the king searched for the finest young men, and wanted to train them up to be servants in his royal court. Daniel and three of his friends were in part of that training. Right from the get go, Daniel set himself apart over the matter of food. The king's servants had a diet laid out for all the people of the Jewish exiles that were being trained up as servants. Daniel said that he wanted to only eat a specific kind of diet, that excluded the rich meats and wine that the king was serving everyone. At first Daniel received resistance over this request, but he persauded his overseer to watch and wait, and if anything bad were ot happen to him, he would swtich back to the normal diet. After watching and waiting, and seeing no harm done, Daniel was allowed to continue with his diet.

One of the most famous parts of the Book of Daniel is the story of the lions den. What happened is there was a statue erected by the king, and he wanted everyone to worship or bow down to the statue. Daniel only bowed down and worshiped the most high God. The penalty for not bowing down to the king's statue was pretty severe, and he had a furnace heated up very high. It was so hot that even the attendants of the furnace were burned by being too close to it. Daniel and his three friends were thrown into the fire and expected to not make it. However, a miracle occured, in which the fire did not burn them, and everyone gazing at the scene saw a bright white figure like the "Son of Man" standing alongside them in the fire. Daniel was promoted because of this, and he received favor with the king.
