Project Summary & Reflection

Problem Statement

Employees often spend a significant portion of their workday on energy-draining activities, repetitive administrative work, constant interruptions, and unclear priorities. This leaves them feeling burned out, overwhelmed, and disconnected from meaningful work that creates value for themselves and their organization.

Persona

The primary target audience includes overwhelmed employees, top performers, employees in chaotic work environments, and professionals navigating constant change, unclear standards, and fear of making mistakes or being replaced by AI.

Key Features

  • Energy Tracking to identify activities that build, maintain, or drain energy.
  • Energy Trend visualization to help users recognize patterns over time.
  • AI-generated insights to identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Energy Reset practices to help users regulate stress in real time.

Testing & Iterations

During testing, both an AI Focus Group and human user testing identified several important opportunities for improvement. The AI Focus Group identified concerns around manual tracking, manager visibility, privacy, psychological safety, and the need for stronger energy metrics.

Human user testing revealed that users were uncertain about the purpose of the two pathways on the home screen, did not immediately understand how Energy Tracking would help them reclaim energy, and wanted clearer explanations of AI Categories and workflow recommendations.

  • Add clearer pathway explanations and testimonials.
  • Add AI Category explanations and guidance.
  • Add privacy controls and journaling preferences.
  • Add a Refocus Wishlist for meaningful work.

Final Reflection

This project reinforced that understanding the human problem is more important than building technology quickly. My initial instinct was to focus on energy tracking and reporting, but testing revealed that users needed much more than awareness. They needed clarity, guidance, psychological safety, and a clear path from identifying energy drains to creating meaningful change.

The most important lesson from this design thinking journey is that energy should not simply be measured. It should be protected, reclaimed, and intentionally redirected toward meaningful work.

Final Presentation Outline

The Hook

Start by asking the audience to imagine ending a workday completely drained, knowing they were busy all day but still did not get to the meaningful work that mattered most.

The Persona

Introduce the overwhelmed employee who wants to do high-value work but is constantly pulled into interruptions, unclear priorities, tedious tasks, and emotional fatigue.

The Solution Demo

Show the Energy Engineering prototype and walk through the two main pathways: Track Energy and Energy Reset Practices.

The Pivot

Explain how feedback from the AI Focus Group and user testing revealed that the app needed clearer onboarding, stronger privacy protections, manager visibility, Energy ROI, and a Refocus Wishlist to show the full value of reclaiming energy.
