Take any item. Take a really really thin and sharp knife. Cut the item into half. Cut it again. And again. And again. And so on till you can't cut it anymore (the knife is sharp enough to cut molecular bonds). What you will be left with is a group of elements (provided you didn't 'cut' the atoms apart- that's a whole other can of worms). If you cut all the items in the world to their elements, you will find there are 94 on Earth. But wait- aren't there 118 elements (as of creating this page)? Yes, there are, but the other 24 elements are super-heavy and were created in atomic smashers and din't last that long. There are also some elements which we don't know the state of!
