Hillenburg graduated from cal arts in 1992

Stephen origonally created early
versions of the SpongeBob SquarePants characters in 1984
while studying marine biology.
During this time
he wrote a comic with many anthromorphic sea creatures
In 1987 Hillenburg left the institute
to pursue his dream of becoming animator

Stephen said Patrick's personality embodies the nature of the starfish.
They look dumb and slow but are very active and aggressive
Stephen said that Mr.crabs was inspired by his

Stephen got insperation from the species bulbous mantle for Squidward.
Stephen said "the octopus has such a large bulbous head
and Squidward thinks he's an intellectual, so of course he's gonna have one"
