The 11 organ systems
1. Skeletal system
Purpose: Provides the body with a rigid framework for support, protects vital internal organs, stores minerals like calcium, and works with muscles to enable movement.
Key components: Bones, cartilage, ligaments, and tendons. The skeleton includes the skull, vertebrae, ribs, sternum, and limb bones like the femur.
2. Muscular system
Purpose: Facilitates movement, maintains posture, and circulates blood.
Key components: Over 600 muscles in the body, which are primarily categorized into three types:
Skeletal muscles: Control voluntary movements and attach to bones via tendons.
Cardiac muscle: The involuntary muscle of the heart.
Smooth muscles: Involuntary muscles that line organs and blood vessels to move substances internally.
3. Nervous system
Purpose: The body's command center, it coordinates and controls all bodily functions by sending electrical signals between the brain, spinal cord, and all other parts of the body.
Key components:
Central Nervous System (CNS): Composed of the brain and spinal cord.
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS): A network of nerves that branch out from the spinal cord to the rest of the body.
4. Circulatory system (Cardiovascular system)
Purpose: Transports oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and waste products through the body via the bloodstream.
Key components:
Heart: The muscular organ that pumps blood throughout the body.
Blood vessels: A network of arteries, veins, and capillaries that carry blood.
Blood: The fluid that carries essential substances to the body's cells and removes waste.
5. Respiratory system
Purpose: Enables breathing by taking in oxygen and expelling carbon dioxide.
Key components:
Upper tract: Includes the nose, mouth, nasal cavity, and throat (pharynx).
Lower tract: Includes the trachea, bronchi, and lungs, where gas exchange occurs in the alveoli.
6. Digestive system
Purpose: Breaks down food into nutrients that the body can absorb for energy, growth, and repair.
Key components: The gastrointestinal (GI) tract, liver, pancreas, and gallbladder. It begins at the mouth and includes the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, and large intestine.
7. Urinary system (Excretory system)
Purpose: Removes liquid waste (urea) from the body, regulates blood volume, and maintains the balance of electrolytes.
Key components: Kidneys (filter blood), ureters (tubes from kidneys to bladder), bladder (stores urine), and urethra (tube for urine to exit).
8. Endocrine system
Purpose: Produces hormones that regulate metabolism, growth, and reproduction.
Key components: Glands such as the thyroid, pituitary, adrenal glands, pancreas, and gonads (ovaries and testes).
9. Immune system
Purpose: Defends the body against infection and disease-causing germs like bacteria and viruses.
Key components: A network of cells, tissues, and organs including the skin, spleen, tonsils, and lymph nodes.
10. Integumentary system
Purpose: Provides a protective barrier against the external environment, regulates body temperature, and houses sensory receptors.
Key components: Skin (the body's largest organ), hair, and nails.
11. Reproductive system
Purpose: Facilitates reproduction to create offspring.
Key components:
Male: Testes, sperm ducts, and penis.
Female: Ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, and vagina.
The cellular foundation
At the most fundamental level, the human body is comprised of trillions of cells, which are the basic unit of life. While there are over 200 different types of cells, they all share common components:
Cell membrane: A thin barrier that encloses the cell and regulates what enters and leaves.
Cytoplasm: A jelly-like fluid that fills the cell and holds the organelles.
Nucleus: The cell's control center, containing its DNA.
Mitochondria: Often called the "powerhouse" of the cell, these organelles generate the energy (ATP) needed for the cell to function.
