Why Barn Owls are Amazing Creatures

I find barn owls fascinating birds because their unique characteristic like their heart-shaped faces or their ability to hear while being silent when hunting.They are also wellknown in pop culture like in the Harry Potter movies and Guardians of Ga'Hoole book series.This article will teach many thing about this species of owl like where they live, what they eat, and long do they raise their young.


Where do they live?

You can find them in almost every part of the world as there are many subspecies like the Amercian barn owl or the Eastern barn owl in the Middle East.


What are their diet?

The diet of the barn owl are very varied. They eat rodents, small birds, insects, amphibians,and reptiles.


What are their nesting habits?

Barn owls are cavity nesters, meaning they use natuarl or man-made structures like barns,trees,church steeples,houses,and nest boxes. Barn owls do not build nests instead they lay eggs on the pellets they regurgitated. Females lay 4-6 eggs which hatch after a month. Barn owls reuse the same nest every year.

How do they raise their young?

Both parents take the part of raising their young. The female is reponsible for the owlets in her care, feeding and them warm in the nest whlie the male is soley reponsible for hunting and bringing home food. The owlets stay with their parents until a few weeks after fledging.

How long do they live?

Barn owls in the wild can live up to 10 years. However, the average lifespan is 2 to 5 years. Barn owls in captivity can live up to 25 to 30 years.
