DAV PILKEY

ABOUT HIM

Challenges

Dav Pilkey, the acclaimed author and illustrator of the Captain Underpants and Dog Man series, has been open about how his disabilities shaped his life and career. As a child, Pilkey was diagnosed with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) and dyslexia, conditions that made traditional schooling a challenge. He struggled to focus in class, had difficulty with reading, and was often reprimanded for his behavior. At one point, a teacher even told him he wouldn't amount to much.

Success

Pilkey conceived the "Captain Underpants" character while attending elementary school in North Ridgeville, Ohio, where he was constantly chastised for his conduct in class. Pilkey therefore frequently sat at a desk in the school hallway. In a national contest for young authors, Pilkey entered his first work, "World War Won," and he took first place in his age group. The 1987 release of the book was recognized with an award.
